Pro Mod secures new sponsor

By Bertie Scott Brown, April 18, 2014 Redhorse Performance recently finalized a three-year Pro Mod Drag Racing Series sponsorship agreement with the NHRA. The arrival of the high-quality performance hose and fittings firm from Hickory Hills, Illinois, substantially reinforces the ranks of this year’s sponsors: Aeromotive, J&A Services, Jegs, Precision Turbo & Engine, and Offwire. The opening event of the 2014 NHRA quarter-mile Pro Mod series occurred in Gainesville, Florida, March 14-16 and was won by the nitrous-assisted machine of Mike Castellana with Rickie Smith runner-up. Round two in Houston, Texas last weekend, April 25-27 was won by supercharged entry Mike Janis with runner-up Mike Castellana. Last year, Redhorse, who has been in business about 10 years, introduced a new 100-micron inline fuel filter known as the 4151 series. With a diameter and length of 1-1/4in and 3-3/4in respectively, you might think achieving full fuel flow through such a small inline filter would be the pressing issue. But it wasn’t. “No,” said Tom Maycock, Redhorse National Sales Manager, “that’s not it. Originally the design featured a large hex nut at the center of the filter body, which sometimes became an impediment when mounting the filter on or close to chassis rails. Now the hex is placed on the filter ends, which streamlines the unit making it much easier to mount.” Offered in both -8AN or -6AN, Redhorse supplies them in attractive blue, black, red or silver. Summit’s Motorama festival grows

By Fergus Ogilvy, April 28, 2014 April 26-27: For the fourth successive year Summit Racing Equipment promoted its annual McDonough, Georgia event. Moved from their warehouse facility to the nearby Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Summit Motorama was their inaugural at the venue and their biggest such event yet. Families arrived and by 1pm on Saturday 10,000 attendees had passed through the gates. Presented by Classic Collectors Insurance and zMAX Micro-lubricant, Summit’s two-day motoring festival displayed more than 1,000 show cars, including a rare Duesenburg as well as machines from Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy’s private collection. Two further components of the Motorama included a vendor midway, comprising nearly 200 participants with some of the leading automotive brands, and a swap meet. Perhaps the key innovation, though, was a collector car auction, one of the Southeast’s largest. Hard work had its reward Happily, the well-rounded show was quite the hit and Summit Racing Equipment will return as title sponsor of next year’s event, scheduled for April 18-19. “We would like to thank all show participants, vendors and visitors who attended the inaugural Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama,” said Ed Clark, President of Atlanta Motor Speedway. “Thanks to the efforts of so many, this year was a tremendous success and we are already underway with the building process for an even more successful event next...

AFIS revitalizes fuel injector performance with new fast-reacting technology

By Bertie Scott Brown The company AFIS might strike you as somewhat obscure, but it isn’t. The acronym stands for Advanced Fuel Ignition Systems and was founded over three years ago by EFI maestro John Meaney, industry veteran Tom Jenkins, and Precision Turbo founder Harry Hruska.     For 2014 AFIS is introducing a new range of fast-reaction fuel injectors and ignition wire sets that helped Dan Fletcher win 6 NHRA national events in 2013.     –Faster opening and closing times incite better atomization and thus increased power -All injectors 48lb and over are flow-matched to plus-or-minus 1 percent for accuracy Hebron, Indiana: Entering its fourth consecutive year as NHRA contingency sponsor, AFIS has announced a new, high quality range of fast-reaction fuel injectors. Named FRT, they suit high performance street cars and racing cars as diverse as Pro Mod to Sport Compacts. Significantly, the major advantage of FRT injectors is their reaction time. Their superiority lies in the introduction of a new electronic solenoid within the injector body that controls the pintel. The diminutive pintel receives its signal from the ECU and by opening and closing faster the FRT injector delivers a crisper, more precise and better atomized charge of fuel. Precise fuel discharge improves the engine’s throttle response and its economy but above all increases its power. Available in either high or low impedance styles AFIS competition injectors operate with either aftermarket or OEM electronic control units. In addition they are capable of operating at 12 or 16volts and, reassuringly, all injectors rated at 48lbs and over are flow-matched. This ensures the racer is never “chasing a...
First off-the-shelf asymmetrical pistons for LS high-performance engines:

First off-the-shelf asymmetrical pistons for LS high-performance engines:

By: Sam Logan Particularly effective on forced induction and longer stroke models JE, our largest indigenous racing piston maker, brought a fresh new presence to asymmetrical forged pistons when they began investigating their potential in race engines, particularly high performance forced-induction engines. As you’d expect piston side loads increase with boost pressure—they also increase with longer stroke crankshafts and even aftermarket camshafts. But JE’s asymmetrical piston with differing skirt sizes and off-set pin has presented several interesting solutions.     -Introduces less friction -Reduces piston weight -200 LS configurations in stock -Two-day delivery 95% of the time -Two-week delivery on custom items -Five-day on expedited custom items Irvine California: JE has pioneered a new range of asymmetrical pistons for GM LS engines. Available off-the-shelf, they are the first of their kind. Known as asymmetrical because their skirts are of noticeably different sizes—a thrust side and a non-thrust side that address disproportionate loads in the cylinder. Also, their piston pin is positioned slightly off center. Though designed to support high cylinder pressures in applications producing 1,500hp-plus, both forced induction and nitrous, they also operate happily in naturally aspirated LS engines. Beyond this the piston configuration promotes lightness, strength, and durability as its unique design enables material to be distributed in the areas exposed to higher stresses. The major skirt, which operates on the thrust side, combats the highest side loads. The lowest side loads, in contrast, are handled by the minor skirt, which is free of undue weight and friction. Further weight reductions are achieved with 106-gram piston pins. Measuring 2.250in long these compare favorably with the pins of traditional...
